MADE IN THE USA ~revised again

I have another wonderful company to add to this MADE IN USA list, WeatherTech is playing their add during the super bowl for 2015 so if you missed it, here it is today, just before the superbowl airs it.
This blog has been updated promoting what a  wonderful country we are that still make stuff in our country! If you know of other’s please comment here so those who might want to know of another great business to support can find it too.

Many of the people I know helped to give me this list. I am not that knowledgeable of all the Made in USA places. I did search many of the sites & was sure to link it if I liked what I saw believing other’s would like to know it as well.

I cannot vouch for all the sites. There are so many~ so who would have guessed! We are still geniuses, or creative & know how to market. We can beat this foreign reliance if we want to.

I fear however, that many will see the “cost” of some items & think, heck, I can go to blank Mart & get it cheaper~ but friend, remember, we are trying to stop this trend, or you would not be reading this. Yes, it does cost more if it is made in the USA, because it is the reality of it all. It costs to make stuff. Did you know that much of the items not made in the USA are done with slave labor? That means, the top guys make all the profit! The workers are not treated well & many are forced to do the work for pennies! That is not an understatement. This is why we must get back to buying local~ to keep our own country from going the way of foreign reliance & to keep the slave labor from destroying other countries. If we don’t buy, they don’t need workers~ It’s up to US~

So, here is the “incomplete” detailed list~

I have clicked on all these sites below, or have purchased some of the items from them to have recommended them here, but there will certainly be the one that slips thru that I did not check. Do your homework & enjoy shopping! Keep this for future reference~

Locally we have a business that sells local crafter’s items. Look to your town to find these as well. Or, start your own store…we live in a college town & that helps as they often have crafts to make & sell. But certainly not required. Just let others know so you have a great business. Better yet, comment here & post it for other’s to read all about it~ periodically I will add the new ones you send me to this list. Keep them coming~

Let’s Make Vinegar

Waste Not~ I first made apple cider vinegar about 18 years ago when I read you could do so in my Little House On The Prairie Cookbook.

I make apple cider vinegar when I have lots of apple cores & peelings, which is what this particular recipe calls for you to do.  I needed to deal with a couple bushels of apples that were being ignored & were getting mealy. Here is the result of lots of apples~

We made applesauce, apple juice, fruit leather, dried apple rings & vinegar. The process for the vinegar will take much longer than the other mentioned products, but was begun at the same time as the other’s were being made. The main goal here is, do not waste any of the fruit. Which I show you here as we literally used every bit of the apple. Nothing was wasted.
All of these projects were done mostly in one day, but for the completion of the vinegar. We started about the one o’clock hour. Wrapping & storing were done on the second day.
First up we (my daughter & I) made dried apple rings. Core the apple, then slice thin and place on cookie sheet or trays that can be dried at temperatures of 150 degrees, and no higher or you end up with cooked apples. I used my wood cook stove with the oven door open and on top of the warming shelf and in my solar  hanging food dryer made by The PANtrie for the perfect temperature to dry.  Of course this is done in the fall or winter when apples are naturally ripe & temps outside allow for the stove to be lit also warming the house. An electric dryer works too for those who do not have the wood stove option. You can use an electric or gas oven during the day time with the same 150 degree temperature. Over night in the electric dehydrator too. This process took all day & into the next morning & will depend on how thick you cut your apple rings.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Next, we made apple juice. I have a champion juicer. which is a heavy duty brand so not easy to move around. But, it has lasted these 16 years with no break downs & has so many uses. The juicer takes the juice then sends the excess out through the end and is what I made the fruit leather from. This is what I meant by waste not.

To make the fruit leather, simply spread the apple paste onto wax or parchment paper lined cookie sheets & place in a warm place to dry. This was done the same day as the apple rings on the wood stove warming shelf & in the oven with door open. Part way through the drying, slice the paste to make it easy to pull off & wrap. It took overnight for this to dry. If you make it too thick, it will take longer. Next day, when all is dry, use plastic wrap to roll up the leather for storage. Then enjoy the healthy, sweet, treat.
Next came the apple sauce. I took the core & peel off the apple(save all this).  Ran it through the juicer without the attachments so it would come out masticated and into my pan for heating, juice & all. I place my clean jars into the open oven of my cook stove to sterilize & heat my jars readying them for the hot applesauce. Place heated through applesauce into jar, seal & place upside down on a counter, covering with a towel to prevent breakage from cool draft. Then in the morning, store away in a cool, dark closet.
Finally~ Take the apple peels, seeds & cores & place in a crock or a jar that can be kept dark. Using the recipe from The Little House On the Prairie Cookbook, add boiled rain or spring water with honey dissolved in the water. Pour over the cores & peels & leave undisturbed for one month. When the bubbling has stopped, leave for at least another month or longer to obtain the right acidity for the apple cider vinegar. Bottle & use however you like ACV.

what is Cassia? or Amalaki? Color your hair safely

Amla, Emblica officinalis, also known as the Indian Gooseberry

Amla powder is from the dried and ground fruit of the Indian Gooseberry tree, Emblica Officinalis. Amla contains natural tannins, vitamin C, ascorbic acid, and acts as a natural astringent. Amla has been used for tanning and dying hides as well as a cosmetic and folk remedy. Amla grows in central and southern India, Burma, and Ceylon.

I get mine here ~

Here is what wikipedia has to say about it ~

I turned gray too early. My younger children were often mistaken for my grandchildren. I had to do something. I did go the gray route, but did not like how it paled me. I looked unhealthy. So I wanted something safe & natural. No skunk stripe. Cassia promised to be the answer. I use it & love the golden color of my is soft as it also conditions & no more gray. It has taken my hair in the back of my head & brought back the true brown color & the gray is now blonde/golden. All mixing very nicely & not unnatural looking. I will never go back to the gray unless I cannot get hold of the product. Its a safe way to treat & color your hair. I get mine here

I have a new site where I am going to continue getting my cassia. It turned out amazing. see picture below. You have several choices in color. This brand was far superior to all that I have tried so far. The cheapest for the amount. a whole pound for $6.50. I am part of a coop where we get enough orders for free shipping so it may be a little more than this. The color was wonderful comparing to the other brands. More grainy & left residue that keeps falling out, but I will deal with the trade off for a cheaper & better outcome.

at this site they say 100 grams colors/conditions short gray hair. I use the 100 grams in four uses. So I stretched it out & it works to divide it up in smaller amounts.

Ginger Snap Tea – Bulk Herb Store

Ginger Snap Tea – Bulk Herb Store.  I make these teas from Bulk Herb Store. No MSG or coloring’s or artificial flavors. Simple & healthy, but so very delicious & amazing. Going to make this one in the morning. It might just become my favorite even better than the Black Spice Chai…mmmmmmm

It has been a while since I have posted and some may wonder where I have been. Life took a different turn but healing has taken place & I can write again.

I wanted to add more on the Ginger Snap tea and what I do with it, as well as the Pumpkin Spice Tea. I have started making a cold version adding the tea mix with peppermint & a small amount of black tea with bergamot flowers. Adding sweetner and chilling is our new drink. It is amazing in its flavor when water is just plain boring. Make some for your health with the treat as a bonus~

Christmas 2011

as requested by some here is the email I sent which came from another friend~

Christmas 2011 — Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods — me rchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time , nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It’s ti me to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
Everyone — yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about so me health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants — all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn’t about big National chains — this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your home town theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Fig Leaf

Fig leaves have medicinal properties. There is a milky juice that comes out of the leaves & stem that can be used externally to heal warts, bites & stings. The milky juice is toxic though so be careful not to ingest it. Don’t lick your fingers etc.

Test on small patch of skin to be sure you do not have an allergic reaction.

fig leaves also have been shown to lower the body’s triglyceride levels. Which help in heart health & obesity.

To make fig leaf tea, simply boil fig leaves in water for at least 15 minutes. A home remedy for bronchitis involves boiling water with three fig leaves and piloncillo, an unrefined sugar (known as Mexican sugar). A home remedy for ulcers involves chewing and swallowing two whole fig leaves daily. says the fig leaves are best known for treating diabetes so check it out & decide if its for you.

Berry Brew uses fig leaves dried. For the recipe on how to make the tincture, & order the herbs, go here Bulk Herb Store

Making Black Walnut Tincture(green)

Today we finally received some much needed rain & before I tell you how to make Black Walnut Tincture, I have a funny story that happened to me & my almost 16 year old son Grant today.

My Child, How badly do you want those Black Walnuts?…Grant & I headed out to our artesian well to fill our jugs with water. We knew the potential for rain was high..we need it desperately. So very dry here. We are at our place of destination hearing thunder in the background. Having searched to find a black walnut tree with walnuts, we scored there at the well. To my disappointment they were not yet dropping to the ground & so high up in the tree we were not able to reach them. Humpf..another day when they have fallen I can come gather them…well, its our turn to fill our jugs & its sprinkling..the tree above is keeping much of the rain off of us, but the umbrella works even better…waiting for each jug to fill it starts to really come down, lots more lightening, half the jugs are full now & the wind kicks up like a tornado is coming, rain is so forceful we see a flash flood beginning, trying to get out of the way of falling branches, we head to the car, being blown back by heavy wind…mind you we are still mostly dry due to the now broken umbrella. I thought for a moment as we are nearing the car that we would have to hit the ground for safety..Grant unlocks the car with the remote..what would we do without remotes!..the umbrella is completely broke & useless so I drop the thing, we have to climb thru the fence to get into the car. Ahh the “safety” of the car. My immediate thought is ~should we stay in here?…we were soaked thru just getting from the short spot at the fence, a mere 4ft. to the car where the umbrella gave out! Fifteen minutes later the storm leaves but some rain is still falling. It won’t matter if we get out now since we are already so wet. We head back to the well where our jugs still sit, blown over, & to our joy & giggling, God dropped those walnuts out of that tree..I got 20 of them! We were laughing & amazed at God’s humor…we were not totally scared during all this, but amused that this is how God got me the needed walnuts..! hah! still chuckling at it all.

Black Walnut Hull Tincture is actually made using green walnuts from the Black walnut tree. Which if you have some get them quick. You will not be able to make the tincture once they turn brown. Oh, they stain whatever they touch. Do not use your white shirt to gather them in..have a bag handy for this retrieval.

I have had lots of little bits of wisdom God has put into my head about these nuts. First, the meat in the nut are silly stupid hard to remove from their hulls. People put them in their drive ways & run them over to crack the outer shell, only to have to pick all that up & then find a way to break open the next layer to get to the nut in hopes of not totally destroying the edible part in the process. I don’t even try anymore. As I was contemplating all this just a week ago it dawned on me that the only true use of this nut is its healing properties of the green hull. The bark & leaves have wonderful uses as well, but today I will only explain about the green hull.

The Green hulls are gathered at the right time when they are falling off the trees in late summer. God made it that way to keep many of us from killing ourselves prematurely trying to figure out how to safely climb the tall trees to obtain the nuts. They are ripe & usable when they have just fallen to the ground so gather them quick. Take a few or a lot(20) and wash them in cold water, gently. Drain the water. Place the green nuts into a ceramic or glass container. A quart sized jar, or a gallon sized jar or a ceramic lemonade container is what I have used this time. Put the nuts into the jar, add to the container a quarter the way with boiling water. Now, if you are using a glass jar, heat your jar previous & while still warm, pour slowly into the jar the boiling water. So you do not crack the glass. No matter the size of your container, fill it a quarter of the way with this boiling water.

Next, you will pour over the nuts with the boiling water, some vodka.
Completely covering the nuts. Using Everclear, which is grain alcohol at 190 proof is the best to use. I pay $17.00 for a quart. So, don’t get too eager to pick all your green walnuts if you do not have enough everclear to cover the nuts. Make sure to get enough if you are planning to share your tincture. Otherwise hoard it for yourself.  Cover with plastic wrap or the lid that belongs to your container.

After three days..yes, only three days later, strain off the tincture, bottle it in dark bottles if you have them, if not, pour into a glass jar & wrap a towel or an old sock around the jar & store in a dark cabinet or closet. Begin immediately to take tincture to rid your body of parasites. To get the directions, you will need to get the book from your library or order one for your self. I cannot advise you on such as each one will be different according to your condition. The Cure for All Disease or The Cure for All Cancers, by Hulda Regehr Clark, Ph.D, N.D.

strained, filled bottles

Why am I doing this tincture you ask? To kill parasites! You may think you do not have those creepy things in you, but if you are alive & breathing, you have parasites. If you have pets, you have parasites. If you, like me, eat meat, you have parasites. It’s just part of the life on this earth. Parasites cause disease, illnesses as simple as a cold or the flu! To cancer & arthritis! Surprised? don’t believe it? All medical doctors were taught to know the parasites in their training to see just what these critters are capable of doing to the human or animal body. Yet, they prescribe drugs to kill just one or two parasites as in the case of cancer, allowing the myriad others survival.

Hulda Clark, scientist & N.D. (doctor of Naturopath)who studied parasites & their harm until her death in 2009 of complications to her spine from a car accident. Dr. Clark had a heart for healing the ills of our bodies. She was not selling anything, and offers to all her recipes for the healing herbs for parasites & how to make the zapper she recommends for killing other parasites. There are at least 100 parasites she studied & not one can survive Black Walnut tincture. Search her books which I recommend to you because there is a lot in there for you to learn that I cannot possibly fit here. I can tell you in her research she found three herbs were all that were needed to kill these harmful parasites & keep them from taking over our bodies. Black Walnut tincture, Wormwood Tincture/capsules & Clove capsules. She eventually believed that if only the Black Walnut were all you took, you could rid your body of disease & illness.

I know it sounds simplistic. But shouldn’t it be? Get started on the tincture, start taking it & see if you don’t begin to feel amazing! It can take a week, or a month..but you will start noticing a big difference in how you feel. Go and be well friends.

making walnut stain

Discard the nuts. Or, put into a bucket add a lot of water to cover the nuts & leave to rot for a year to get black walnut stain! Ours will be ready in the early summer next year which we plan to stain our front room wood floors with.
